statement.
People have been framing images for millennia, a ritual pushed to absurdity by mass-media capitalism. That an image undergoes violent change once displayed in isolation from its surroundings is undeniable – but what sawdust does this process leave behind?
Rossi focuses on the subdued medium of drawing to soul-search through the problems of representation. Mining image culture from the days of icons and illuminated manuscripts to today’s social-media interfaces, she is interested in the human response to contemporary image-exhibitionism, both at the scale of the individual and collective.
Scrutinizing questions raised by luminaries such as Debord, Adorno, Benjamin, and Berger, Rossi gambles that by re-inscribing the distance from viewer to image into the image itself, we can reclaim some minimal sincerity in representing the world.
bio.
Georgina Isabel Rossi (b. 1993, Santiago de Chile) is a professional violist and outsider artist. Born and raised afoot the Andes to classical musician parents, at sixteen Rossi moved to the U.S. on a national grant to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. She completed her Bachelor’s at the Manhattan School of Music (2015) and holds a Master’s from The Juilliard School (2017). Rossi is a tenured member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and performs throughout South America and the United States. Known as a performer and advocate of contemporary Chilean music, she recently soloed with the Orquesta Sinfónica Uncuyo under Giovanni Guzzo, and the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile alongside Alejandra Urrutia. She has attended the Sarasota Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and BANFF, and will be a fellow in the Toronto International Chamber Music Academy this summer. Passionate about visual art from early childhood, Rossi studied privately with Chilean painter and co-founder of the art-collective Amigas, Susana Larraín. Upon arriving in New York, Rossi attended the Art Students League under Jerry Weiss.
Having pursued classical music her whole life, in 2019, Rossi awoke to the inconvenient truth that she is, in fact, a contemporary artist. Rossi's debut CD, Mobili (New Focus Recordings), will have a limited edition art object version in vinyl form that will feature her own handmade original artwork.
